Daniel Gade

Daniel M. Gade is a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, professor, and entrepreneur. Daniel enlisted in 1992 and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science.
Gade's military career spanned over 25 years, during which he served in various locations, including the United States, Korea, and Iraq. He was wounded twice while serving as a company commander in Ramadi, Iraq. His second wounding was severe, resulting in the amputation of his right leg. Despite his injuries, he remained on active duty and went on to earn a Master of Public Administration and a Ph.D. in Public Administration and Public Policy from the University of Georgia in 2007 and 2011, respectively. In 2011, Gade returned to West Point as a professor, teaching political science, economics, and leadership courses until his retirement from the Army in 2017.
He has repeatedly served in positions of great responsibility in government, including directing veterans olicy at the White House Domestic Policy Council under President Bush, serving on several VA advisory committees during the Obama Administration, and serving as a political appointee in the first Trump Administration. He also was appointed to the National Council on Disability by the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Most recently, he directed the Virginia Department of Veterans Services from 2022 to 2024.
Gade is an advocate for improved veteran disability policies, emphasizing the importance of self-reliance and vocational rehabilitation. He has authored several scholarly articles, and a book titled "Wounding Warriors: How Bad Policy Is Making Veterans Sicker and Poorer," which critiques current disability services for veterans.
Gade's journey from decorated military officer to dedicated advocate for veterans exemplifies his unwavering dedication to service and passion for making a positive impact on society.
